Dear Mr. Grinter, My father, Leonard Bower, was at RAF St. Athan from September 20th 1940 to February 18th 1941 (as an aircraftsman) and again from June 22nd 1943 to April 4th 1946, as a flight instructor. He kept a daily diary throughout the war. Now 94 and blind, he has given these diaries to me and I am using them to build a one-woman dramatised presentation of his wartime, Daddy’s Diaries. One of the reasons he was urged to train as an instructor (apart from his natural abilities as a teacher) was his extremely high quality illustrations, which he used to teach the trainees parts of the aircraft, particularly when there was a language barrier. (He was training as an illustrator at Leeds college of Art before the war, and went on to become an art lecturer.) This led to his being asked to produce countless pieces of artwork when at St. Athan – stage scenery, posters, notices, diagrams, drawings, cartoons of people, murals on walls and lettering on planes. When clearing the attics at Dad’s house a large number of these mistakenly got thrown away – very distressing indeed. I only glimpsed them and somehow they got on to the wrong pile, destined for the skip. I intended to use them as visual aids in the show. I am wondering, given the huge amount of artwork Dad generated at St. Athan, if there are any examples of his work somewhere in your archives, or if anyone has examples they would be willing to let me photograph. The other thing in which my father excelled and was known for at St. Athan and the surrounding district was his clarinet playing. His diaries show that he and his band, 4 Wing, were playing almost nightly by 1943, in the camp, in Barry, Cardiff, Swansea and many other venues, including Brangwyn Hall, St. Donat’s castle and a US Naval ship in Barry harbour! Again, if there are any memories of this or memorabilia associated with it, I would be keenly interested to hear of them. If you can help in any way, particularly in providing visual material, I would be hugely grateful.
Yours sincerely, Jane Bower
